Family traditions are a great way to build family unity, create life-long memories and create a sense of heritage and family beliefs for our kids to pass on to their kids someday.
‘The more you love your children, the more they learn to love others.’
A.D. Williams
Years ago, we started a Valentine’s Day tradition in our house. In an effort to try to fill our kids heads and hearts with positive affirmation, we started a Valentines Day countdown. Beginning on Feb. 1st and ending on Feb. 14th, they get a ‘valentine’ representing one thing their dad and I love about them.
We are intentional and specific in acknowledging things about them that we love. Things that require their effort or that they have control over.
We choose to not include things like, you’re beautiful, you’re smart, you’re the fastest athlete. While these things may be true, they can also change. It is important that our kids not define their self-worth or value from things they cannot control.
Typically I purchase pre-cut heart shapes from the Target dollar spot, Michaels or the Dollar Tree. We sharpie on one thing and just tape it to their door. There has been more than one year where it has been requested that we remove them from the door and hole punch them for the kids to stow away and look back on whenever they wanted. (The middle school years are a great time to put tangible reminders in our kids hands of how much and why we love them.)
- I love that you persevere when school work feels hard.
- I love when you find ways to help others.
- I love listening to you pray before dinner.
- I love that you are brave and try to new things.
- I love that you make time to play with your little brother.
- I love that you try hard to make good choices.
- I love that you were chosen to be mine.
- I love your hugs.
- I love our talks before bed.
- I love that you tell jokes to make others feel happy.
- I love you no matter what.
Think about what you love about your kid(s) and jump in to create a new family tradition this year. (It is not too late, even if it is past February 1st.
